Snowshoeing in Breckenridge

The Burro Trail begins at the base of Peak 9 at Breckenridge Ski Resort but it doesn’t take long to escape the crowds as you quickly disappear into the woods. This trail has minimal elevation gain and offers an abundance of distance options.

South Illinois Creek Trail

Getting there — Go South on Main Street, hang a left on Boreas Pass Road. Travel on Boreas Pass for 1, 400 feet. Take a right into the second entrance of the parking lot next to the Stephen C. West Ice Arena. The trailhead is in the Southeastern corner of the lot.

Worth the trip — This is one of the most accessible trails in town. Start your trek on South Illinois High before quickly jumping on the Blue River Bikepath. Go for just more than a half-mile before hanging a quick left. (There isn’t a sign but it’s clearly visible.) A quick climb will lead to a great little overlook of town — complete with a wooden bench. Bring a lunch or a bottle of wine to enhance the outing and the ambiance. For your return, hop on the Southside Trail for a bit more distance or head back the way you came for a solid out-and-back experience.

Duration: 1-2 hours

Burro Trail

Getting there — The trailhead is located at the base of Peak 9 across from Beaver Run Resort. You can pay-to-park in the lot on the East side of Beaver Run or you can park at the ice rink & snag a lift from the Breck Free Ride bus (it’s free) to the base. The Brown route will get you where you need to go.

Worth the trip — This outing begins at the base of the Lehman ski trail — a cross-section at Breckenridge Ski Resort but it doesn’t take you long to leave the slopes behind as you meander into the woods alongside a creek. This trek offers minimal elevation gain along with multiple out-and-back options, eventually linking up with Spruce Creek Road a bit more than four miles out.

Duration: You be the judge. Go for as long or as short as you like.

B&B Trail

Getting there — Take a left onto Wellington Road off North Main Street. Continue on Wellington until you arrive at the French Gulch Road intersection. Stay right and drive slowly through the neighborhood before passing Country Boy Mine. The trailhead and parking lot is on the right side of the road.

Worth the trip — Not only is this trail close to town but it quickly transports you back to the early mining days of Breck with mound after mound of tailings piles and relics from the past. Saunter through the wintry woods for close to a mile before coming to a junction. Take a left to continue on the loop or hang a right to extend your day on Turk’s Trail before joining up with Sallie Barber Road. On your return trip, stop and check out the historic Reiling Dredge and enjoy the views of peaks 6 and 7 of the ski resort in the distance.

Duration: 1-3 hrs depending on pace & people
