Breckenridge, Colorado rides high on a great combination of rolling mountain backdrops, an exhaustive list of activities and a cozy ski town atmosphere. Located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Breckenridge Ski Resort was once a booming mining town of the Old West. However, it's not all snow and skis in the wider area every season of the year offers family-friendly events, from film festivals to its very own Oktoberfest. There are also numerous ways to step into nature, and tours through the stately Breckenridge Historic District. From hot air ballooning to white water rafting, you'll never run out of activities in this slope-side resort.

Winter activities

With around 25 feet of snow in the colder months, Breckenridge can't help but look and feel especially atmospheric in the winter, and whether you're into ice skating, dog sledding or straightforward downhill skiing, the town has much to offer. The snowy backcountry is peppered with Mountain Division Huts, which intrepid vacationers can use to plan a snowshoe hike or cross-country ski. Don't neglect the après-ski either: 75 restaurants run the gamut from fine sushi dining to Alpine-style coffee houses, as well as classic pub fare. Many of the hotel resorts, like Beaver Run, also offer a number of late-night hangouts.

Summer activities

Come in the summertime to see that sweeping Rocky horizon in full color. Breckenridge Summer Fun Park offers power trampolines, mountain biking, rock climbing walls, a human maze and a miniature golf course, while Country Boy Mine Tours gives visitors a glimpse of the town's mining history. The fast-paced action continues with summer dog sledding, whitewater rafting and zip -lining. In addition, the Breckenridge Beaver Course is a championship-designed golf course for those craving an 18-hole adventure.

Ullr Fest

This festival is a wild ride through Viking and Norse culture, on the other side of the Atlantic. From comedy night, parades and a bonfire to the crazily-themed Ullympics, the laughs keep coming during this memorable January week.

Oktoberfest

In an ode to all things German, Breckenridge celebrates Oktoberfest with beer, sausage, polka music, traditional German apparel and Bavarian dancers. This is also a great time to see vibrant autumn colors in the area.

Winter holidays

Christmas and the surrounding holidays are a big deal in this postcard-perfect mountain town. The holidays begin with the Race of the Santas, when scores of Santas run down Main Street. During the Lighting of Breckenridge, streets are aglow as Santa greets children from his sleigh. The Dew Tour, seen on nationwide television, showcases the best in snowboarding and skiing talent. New Year's is rung in with a parade, a concert and fireworks.

Breck Bike Week

This summer event celebrates everything about cycling, and includes children's lessons, backwoods biking, group rides and free bike tune-ups. With dozens of trails, there is a lot of terrain to explore.

Travel information

Situated deep in the Rockies, Breckenridge does not have its own airport. Instead, most visitors fly into the Denver International Airport (DEN), which is an hour and a half drive to the east. There are plenty of buses to transport visitors from the airport to Breckenridge every day. Another option is the smaller Colorado Spring Airport, also a 90-minute drive. Visitors who choose to arrive entirely by driving can easily find Breckenridge just 15 miles south of Interstate 70.

Climate information

The high-alpine climate in Breckenridge is what gives the town so much snow throughout the winter, and cool, dry air during the summer. In fact, the town gets over 150 inches of snow on average each year. At nearly 10, 000 feet above sea level, Breckenridge is definitely in the midst of the mountains, yet it is low enough to have beautifully wooded areas as well. Summer highs never get above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, with mid-summer averages hovering around 70. The average low during winter nights is zero; however, winter days typically warm up to around 30 degrees, creating ideal skiing weather.
